A
record breaking expert in descending mountain cliffs and crossing waterfalls
ended his spree September 25,2004. When he was tragically killed while attempting
to set a new record.
On September 25,2004 the victim, 25 year old K. Daminda Thabrew of Balapitiya was ready to create a new record by descending the 722 foot (171 meters) Diyaluma falls within the shortest period of time with the aid of a rope. While his parents, well wishers and spectators were waiting at the foot of the fall Daminda got on to the top of the falls from the Panagala route. However, heavy rains and adverse weather conditions covering the whole area with mist prevented Daminda from achieving his target till noon. By this time most of the spectators had left the area leaving Daminda's parents, close relatives and police officers to witness his achievement which later turned out to be a disaster. |

pm Daminda decided to try his leap and he did not descend even five feet
when he hit against a His parents and well-wishers together with the people in the area rushed him to the Koslanda hospital where he was pronounced death. Daminda was the first to descend Sri Lanka's highest Bambarakanda waterfall a year ago. Months later
he unsuccessfully attempted to descend Madulsima at world's end and was
rescued after he was stuck in a cliff. After a post mortem inquiry at
the Koslanda hospital Daminda's body was handed over to his parents. |
