The fall is located on the Thudugala Estate (Kalutara district), which extends for over 400 hectares. Once owned by a British national, a derelict bungalow still remains. There is a natural swimming pool surrounded by Ketala plants and a giant pus creeper (fern) that has spread to cover an area of 1 hectare. Also within the Thudugala Forest Reserve, there are many species of birds. These include the migrant bird ‘Yellow Magta’, with its colourful plumage and yellow underbelly, and ‘Dicaeum Erythornynchos’, the smallest bird in Sri Lanka

Extensive cultivation of palm oil trees, known as Katupol, is putting the fall’s aquifers at risk. According to local people, the palm oil plant absorbs around 12 litres of water a day.

Take the road from Colombo towards Kalutara and turn onto Matugama Road at Katukurunda Junction. Continue for 5km to Dodangoda Junction. The fall is around 8km from here.
